Wonderland in Los Angeles
(NEW YORK) The fashion collaborations sparked by the recent Tim Burton remake of Alice in Wonderland were almost too numerous to count—so if you had trouble keeping track, allow FIDM to help. The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising will kick off a three-part exhibition inspired by the classic on May 27, corresponding to the film’s June 1 DVD and Blu-ray debut. Part one? Original costumes from the film designed by costumer extraordinaire Colleen Atwood, who already has two Academy Awards for Costume Design under her belt. Expect Johnny Depp’s Mad Hatter “fighter” look, several of Mia Wasikowska’s Alice dresses and the stunning Red Queen dress pictured, worn by Helena Bonham Carter. Sketches, hats, and shoes will also be on display.
The second part of the exhibition, called the “Edgier Side of Alice,” will deal with those aforementioned collaborations: the Alice-inspired designs of Sue Wong, Tom Binns, and even Avril Lavigne will be on display. Finally, FIDM grads themselves will have the chance to take inspiration from the film, and their creations (made under the supervision of FIDM fashion mentor and instructor Nick Verreos) will make up the third part of the exhibition. The exhibition is open to the public and runs until September 30, 2010.
