Hear Me Roar
(NEW YORK) March 8 is International Women’s Day, and who better to host a female-centric fête than Wonder Woman herself? “Happy Women’s Day to you!” Diane von Furstenberg greeted the guests at her Meatpacking District boutique and studio last night, where she and slews of revelers (both boys and girls) celebrated the launch of DVF’s first-ever compilation CD, Proud to Be Woman (pick your copy up here!). The proceeds from the project benefit Vital Voices, a cause the designer has been a longtime supporter of which works to train and empower emerging women leaders and social entrepreneurs around the globe.
“We wrote letters and it was overwhelming!” von Furstenberg revealed of the process of recruiting musicians for the album (the finished product includes tracks by Joss Stone, Mary J. Blige, Santigold, Christina Aguilera, and more). “We actually had more people than we could use. So we’ll have to do another one!” The Daily had to wonder, though: why wasn’t the designer herself performing on her album? She laughed. “You don’t want me to sing!”
On hand for the event—and for a special performance--was one of the album’s contributors, Estelle, who arrived just as DJ Kiss was playing her hit “American Boy.” But the musician had far from OD’ed on the Kanye-collaborated track. “When I’m drunk I love it, I’ll be dancing,” she laughed, “but when I’m sober I’m like ugh, god. But I do love it!” Estelle had been celebrating Women’s Day all day in the modern way: “I’ve been posting about International Women’s Day the whole day on Twitter,” she shared before she took the stage. “Women are all magic!”
